换车道要三思,千万别downgrade, All about driveways

Hello Everyone, welcome to my channel
ZU DIY today I want to talk about driveway paving If you live in urban area, you will probably see three kinds of driveway paving asphalt, concrete and paving bricks/stones asphalt paving is a mixer with black tar , small stones and sands, applied and rolled on the driveway foundation Concrete paving is paved by concrete mixer Concrete paving could be plain or stamped stamped concrete could be done in different patterns and colors those are, of course, much more costly Paving bricks are high-end choice it’s interlocking bricks or cobblestones fit perfectly tight on the foundation like this one I have at my house
it’s paved by solid bricks talking about the cost, asphalt is generally
much cheaper to install and maintain, then comes concrete paving bricks and stones interlock are the most expensive. In rural areas there could be gravel paving Some rural properties occupy big lots the driveway might be as long as a few hundred meters gravel paving is obviously reasonable considering the cost The advantage of asphalt paving is economical and relatively easy to maintain a resurface need to be done every 3-5 years it’s not hard, you can hire a contractor, or you can buy resurface materials at Home depot or Lowe’s and roll by yourself The resurfacing costs usually lower than $2 per SF Concrete paving could outlast asphalt
The major issue about concrete paving is cracking if the foundation is not perfectly pounded
or rammed after years of traffic
the lower part will easily cracks The extreme temperature in Canada also speeds concrete cracking repairing those cracks are nearly impossible you can mix some mortar to fill and patch but it always looks ugly and cannot last long that’s why many concrete cracks are left like that until the whole thing being tore up Paving bricks /cobblestones or interlock is the most endurable but interlock costs the most masons pave it piece by piece by hands before that, the foundation needs to be pounded perfectly some interlock could be very fancy and complicated the elaborating work costs a lot labor and time In West Europe country like the Netherlands Brick interlocking streets are everywhere
some have been there since 200 years ago stone interlocking is even more longlasting ,but it is astoundingly expensive In Prague, I found contractors are fixing the interlock while using the some rock pieces when the Old Prague was built thousand years ago the historical roads and streets are under ongoing maintenance everyday but the rocks last forever Another benefit for Interlock paving is quicker seepage than asphalt or concrete but there are two major concerns for interlock first , weeds tend to grow in between gaps you will easily find green rimmed bricks like this especially on a poorly maintained interlock pavement the weedy interlock gave a impression that the property on the whole is not maintained properly Even the whole neighbourhood is affected Another problem is partially sunken the foundation gradually sinks during years of usage, dragging bricks down and forming a basin it is inevitable. good thing is the sinking will finally stop after 10 or 20 years you will see no more lowering and you can fix it In today’s video, I will explain how do I fix and maintain my brick driveway To deweed and to even the sunken area to remove weeds, you can use this hooked tool it is a easy manual method squeeze the blade in between bricks to remove the visible plants but doing this will not remove the invisible roots it means the green stuff will come back later You can also apply some chemical like RoundUp RoundUp is a non selective weed killer by stopping the photosynthesis, it kills every plant it touches but RoundUp cannot completely kill all the
roots after 1-2 years, this diehard weeds will revive again another way to remove the weeds is reseal let’s make it clear why there will be weeds on interlock? the gaps between bricks were used to filled by fine sands years after, wind and rain steal some sands away daily dust occupies the empty place and turn into soil dust could hold more moisture give weed seeds a tiny warm bed reseal is to spray the interlock with powerful power washer aim the water blade to deep clean the gaps spray soil, weeds and roots out after this deep cleaning, after drying brush sand and cement mixer back into the gaps the mixer is 7 sands and 1 cement broom the mixer until it sink into every tiny crevices The resealed interlock should be weedfree for as long as 5 years my driveway has been infested by weeds years ago high traffic areas sinks too it’s not hard to fix the sunken area, go to local construction supplier to purchase bags of limestone, or screenings limestone is a mixer with tiny rocks, and
fine sands lift the bricks up
fill limestone, or screenings on the foundation since this is a patch repair you need to use a rubber hammer to pound every single piece of brick heavily use a bubble level to make every piece leveled with untouched area This is a masonry job and it is backbreaking every piece of brick weights about 7/8 pounds it’s OK to hold a piece for short time
but doing this a few hours is physically demanding if you are not used to this strong exercises, do not hesitate to hire a contractor after years of DIY, I get to know why masons charge a lot they can easily charge you $50 per hour or over because masonry job is exhausting , skilled and dirty OK my driveway looks good after fixing it is not perfectly even since I only fixed some patches but as I said it is 80% and up satisfactory plus, it is weed free and resealed the uneven color is caused by reseal mixer cement in the mixer shows lighter color
after 2 month’s use, it should looks even I will apply some interlock sealant later there are various sealant products for brick, for stone, dry look or wet look, satin or high gloss after applying the sealant, it will look beautiful As for the mixer
I brushed into brick gaps I mixed it by 7 sands and 1 cement you can buy from store instead of mixing by self it is called polymeric sand
polymeric sand is mixed by sands and adhesive I believe major part of the adhesive is cement you can use from the bag how to judge if the fixed patch is good enough my standard is after redoing the bricks
there will not be puddles on the driveway in Canada’s winter, puddles on the driveway could freeze make it slippery and unsafe I checked my fixed driveway in wet days and with hose too there are no more puddles like before
it meets my standard if you are looking for a new driveway paving my suggestion is asphalt paving it is relatively cheap
a standard single driveway costs less than $2000 asphalt paving is easy to maintain by self or by contractor with limited expense when budget allows, go for interlock it is a big investment, easily beyond 10 thousand, but interlock could last forever the maintain and repair is manageable as I showed in the video some house owners are bothered by weeds on the interlock and replace the bricks by asphalt to me this is a house downgrade it wouldn’t help to increase the property
value on the contrary, by doing so, a good feature was replaced by a cheap one Don’t be scared in front of a weedy interlock you could fix it if you want to learn and try Time to say Bye, please give me comments, likes and share this video I always hope this video could help more DIYer Thanks for watching and see you next project!

  1. 大家用填缝的沙子我还是建议用专业的聚合沙polymeric sand,如果用普通沙子混水泥,一些水泥会停留在砖的表面,改变砖的颜色。
