Journey Indiana – Burl & Ingot

SADAN LABAS BRINGS US THE STORY>>I CONSIDERED BEING AN ARCHITECT OR ENGINEER. I HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THINGS WORK TOGETHER AND HOW THINGS WORK. GROWING UP, I WAS REALLY FOCUSED ON FANTASY ART AND I REALLY ENJOYED COMIC BOOK AND I REALLY ENJOYED GREEK MYTHOLOGY A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE IT WAS TAKING ANIMALS AND HUMANS AND HYBRIDIZING THEM AND CENTAR AND PEGASUS, CAME FROM THAT ERA. I’M DRAWN TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT MEDIUMS. I THINK EARLY ON IN MY CAREER, I WAS DRAWN TOWARDS NETTLES BECAUSE IT’S PERMANENCE. I FELT THAT IT WOULD SPAN THE TEST OF TIME. YOU CAN RIP A PAINTING OR BURN, BUT WITH A METAL SCULPTURE, THAT’S SOMETHING THAT IS A LOT HARDER TO MANIPULATE AFTER THE IDEA IS DONE. I HAVE REALLY BEEN IN LOVE WITH THE CASTING PROCESS AND THE CASTING PROCESS UTILIZES, YOU KNOW, METALS OF ALL DIFFERENT TYPES, AND I REALLY ENJOYED, LIKE I SAID, BECAUSE OF HOW LONG LASTING IT IS AND THE THINGS MADE OUT OF METAL THAT ARE DESIGNED TO STAND THE TEST OF TIME. WE CREATE MONUMENTS AND AWARDS ALL OUT OF METAL ARTS. IT’S AN HONOR. IT HAS A HIGH VALUE FOR WHAT IT IS. I THINK WORKING IN THAT MEDIUM ELEVATES WHAT I DO. AND IT ALSO — IT ADDS PORE ADDE PROCESS TO IT. WHILE IT TAKES A LITTLE MORE TIME, IT WILL LAST SO MUCH MORE. I FEEL THAT THE INVESTMENT OF THE TIME YOU PUT INTO IT IS RETURNED BACK TO IT AFTERWARDS. SO DEFINITELY METALS AND THE CASTING PROCESS HAVE BEEN A HUGE INFLUENCE IN THE TYPE OF ART THAT I DO. EARL AND INGUS, THE NAME OF THE WORKSHOP, WE HAVE TWO SIDE-BY-SIDE GARAGES WHEN WE FIRST CREATED THE RESOURCE. ONE WAS THE WOOD WORKING SIDE AND ONE WAS METAL. INSTEAD OF SAYING THE METALWORKING SIDE AND WE SAID EARL AND INGUS. ONE OF THE WAYS WE HELP YOUNG ASPIRING ARTISTS IS WE ARE CURRENTLY HOSTING A LINE OF SUMMER CAMPS. WE GOT THROUGH OUR FIRST TWO SESSIONS AND THE LAST SESSION, I’M TEACHING THE CLASS ABOUT BODY DUPLICATION AND LIVE CASTING. IT’S A MEDIUM THAT PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND. PEOPLE THINK OF WOOD WORKING OR METAL OR DRAWING OR PATENTING AND I FEEL THAT’S PRETTY MUCH THE BIG SCOPE OF THINGS AND PEOPLE SEE IT. BUT BODY DUPLICATION CLASS, IT FOCUSES ON THE KIDS CO KIDS DUPG THEIR HANDS. THEY LET IT HARDEN UP AROUND THE POSITION OF THE HAND AND THEN THE DEMOLD PHASE IS JUST ALLOWING THEIR HAND TO COME OUT AND THEN WE DRAIN ANY WATER INSIDE THE VOID AND THEN THEY POUR A PLASTER BACK INSIDE IT AND PLASTER HARDENS. AND THE GREAT THING ABOUT ALGENATE, THE RUBBER TEARS OFF EASY. IT’S NOT GREAT FOR CREATING A LOT OF DUPLICATION, BUT TO MAKE ONE DUPLICATION OF THEIR BODY, IT’S PERFECT FOR. SO THE KIDS GET TO DO THAT. AND IN THAT PROCESS, THERE ARE BUBBLES OR PROBLEMS THAT ARE FORMED FROM IT. THEY WILL GET A CHANCE TO FIX THOSE LITTLE PROBLEMS AFTER CASTING COMES OUT AND THEN THEY GET A CHANCE TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATERIAL. THERE’S A PAINTING TECHNIQUE THAT YOU CAN MAKE PLASTIC SCULPTURES LOOK LIKE METAL SCULPTURES. AND YOU CAN MAKE IT LOOK REALLY REAL. AND THEN THE KIDS GET TO TAKE THEM HOME WITH THEM AND IT WILL FOREVER ACT LIKE A LITTLE MEMORIAL TO THE CLASS AND THEIR HAND AND THEIR STATE AT THIS TIME. AND MOM AND DAD GET TO HAVE THIS, LIKE LITTLE MOMENT FROZEN IN TIME OF THEIR KID, YOU KNOW, IN THE SUMMER CAMP AND I THINK IT’S A LOT OF FUN FOR THEM AS WELL. ART IS FOUND IN EVERY FACET OF LIFE. I THINK ART IS FINDING A WAY TO ELEVATE SPECIFIC MEDIUMS INTO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. YOU KNOW, TAKING BASIC MATERIALS OR TAKING, YOU KNOW, THINGS THAT ARE CONSIDERED GARBAGE, TRASH, THINGS THAT AREN’T USEFUL AND REFORMING IT TO GIVE PEOPLE AN IDEA OF AN EMOTION OR A THOUGHT OR SOME MESSAGE YOU ARE TRYING TO PASS ALONG. SO IT’S VERY TRANSFORMATIVE.

  1. Great video guys! Love the special fx added to it (flying letters in the beginning), the videos segmented and flashing (lots of movement), and the idea behind him walking through the different locations; nice. Congrats to the ones involved with this series/channel in producing something beautiful and inspiring.
